Ted Maple PH D Day Nursery Assocation 2013The board of directors of Day Nursery Association of Indianapolis, Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of Ted Maple, Ph.D. as the President and CEO. He will succeed Carolyn M. Dederer who will retire August 2 after 15 years with the organization.

Maple comes to Day Nursery from United Way of Central Indiana where he led United Way’s education priority with a focus on early childhood and school-age initiatives.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Indianapolis, a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Butler University and his Ph.D., in, Early Childhood Education from Ball State University.

He began his career in education as a kindergarten and first grade teacher in Pike Township. Following his time in the public schools, he served as Director of the Early Childhood Program at St. Mary’s Child Center where he led the nationally-accredited early childhood program for 200 at-risk preschoolers at two locations in Indianapolis. In 2005, Maple’s career in early childhood took a different turn, when he was selected as United Way’s Director of Success By 6. In this role, over more than eight years, he crafted United Way’s early childhood agenda that included programs, policy advocacy and community engagement. In 2012, he was promoted to Director of Education to oversee United Way’s two education priorities:  children entering school ready to learn, and performing on grade level by sixth grade.

He lives with his wife and three children on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

The Day Nursery Auxiliary held their Annual Meeting on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Meridian Hills Country Club. In addition to electing officers for the 2013-2014 membership year, the members celebrated Sue Hirschman, who has been an Auxiliary member for 50 years and saluted Day Nursery Association President Carolyn Dederer who is retiring on August 2.

Day Nursery Auxiliary members gathered at Hollyhock Hill on Friday, December 7 for their second annual holiday luncheon. There’s always a good time when Auxiliary members get together to celebrate their friendships and the financial support generated throughout the year for Day Nursery Association’s early childhood care and education programs at their seven area centers. The members also brought toys and items for Day Nursery’s newest center, an Infant and Toddler Center, that will open in the Fall, pending funding.

The Annual Day Nursery Auxiliary Style Show and Luncheon was held October 2, 2009 at Oak Hill Mansion in Carmel.  This event is the major fundraiser for the Auxiliary, whose mission, since 1938 has been to support the Day Nursery Association through service and fundraising.  This year’s event, Precious as Gold-Children Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, was co-chaired by Jenny Rosebrock and Marianne Stout. The fashions were provided by Lilly’s Boutique of Zionsville, Day Furs and Mary & Martha’s Exceedingly Chic Boutique of Carmel.   Day Nursery Auxiliary members who modeled were joined by a special guest Indianapolis First Lady Winnie Ballard, who also served as honorary chair. Leslie Olsen of WISH TV 8 returned this year as the M.C. Our special guest was Danielle Smith, who attended the Day Nursery Ruth A. Lilly Center on Central Avenue.  She shared her memories of Day Nursery and talked about how her early discoveries of color and art at Day Nursery lead her on a career that lead to her current position teaching fashion design at the  Art Institute of Indianapolis. Auxiliary President Shirley Romine presented a check for $10,000 to Carolyn Dederer, Executive Director of the Day Nursery Association prior to the luncheon. The event was generously supported by Digestive Health Center Gastroenterology of Indianapolis; Anthem; Benefit Associates; Johnson, Grossnickle and Associates; Clarian Health; Ernst & Young; Baker & Daniels LLP and Greenwalt, Sponsel & Co.

The Day Nursery Auxiliary Annual Meeting and Luncheon was held May 15, 2009 at the Meridian Hills Country Club. During the social hour, member Debbie O’Malia presented a display of beautiful jewelry from her company Crown Jewels. President Jenny Rosebrock called the meeting to order. The membership voted to accept the slate of officers for the 2009-2010 membership year. Shirley Rominewas elected president. The list of officers has been updated in the right hand column of this blog. 

The Auxilary presented a check for $15,000 to Day Nursery Association Executive Director Carolyn Dederer.  This check brings the total amount donated this year by the Auxiliary to the Association to $40,000.  The money will be used for tuition assistance scholarships for children enrolled in the seven Day Nursery locations.

Jenny Rosebrock, who will serve at co-chair of the 2009 Day Nursery Auxiliary Style Show with Marianne Stout, presented some plans for the October 2 event at Oak Hill Mansion in Carmel.  The event theme will be Precious As Gold: Children of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Jenny asked members to help support the event by recommending sponsors for the show and donating items like gift cards for the silent auction. She is also especially interested in donations of antique collectibles and glassware in following with the historical theme of the event.

Several members were honored for reaching the milestone of 50 years of service to the Day Nursery Auxiliary. They are Pat Ball, Sally Lugar and Susan ShieldsMary Brown, who joined the Auxiliary in 1955 was at the luncheon and was also recognized.
