According to research done by the United Way of Central Indiana, the typical middle-class child is read to for nearly 1,500 hours before entering 1st grade, whereas a child from a low-income family is read to an average of just 25 hours. Thanks to the Arthur Jordan Foundation, Day Nursery is now able to provide more access to great books and more family reading time. Their generous funding created a series of Preschool Lending Libraries for several Day Nursery centers. Filled with books for children of all ages as well as parent resource books, these libraries provide the children with many hours of important and fun opportunities for literacy development and family engagement. Today, Day Nursery Auxiliary volunteers came to the Day Nursery administrative office to help prepare new lending libraries for the Day Nursery Federal and Day Nursery State Center families. Each library will have 250 new books which can be checked out by parents to take home and share with their children. Here are a few pictures of Auxiliary volunteers helping out. For the fourth year in a row, we again have an opportunity to raise money for the Day Nursery Auxiliary, help another volunteer organization, and have some fun at the same time! The Junior League of Indianapolis hosts the Holiday Mart every year at the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The Holiday Mart brings together vendors from around the country offering holiday and other items for shoppers to purchase. This year’s Holiday Mart is from Wednesday, November 4 to Sunday, November 8, 2009. Holiday Mart hours are Wednesday 6:30 pm to 10 pm, Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 9 am to 8 pm, Saturday 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.
The vendors need assistance selling the items at their booths during shopping hours and we can earn money for the Day Nursery Auxiliary by serving as paid volunteers. The vendors pay $10 per hour for us to help at their booths, and the money is donated to the Auxiliary. A minimum shift is four hours but more hours are available. And paid volunteers can shop before or after their shifts without buying an admission ticket.
For more information or to sign up for a shift, please call DNA member Margie Galloway at 844-5884 (home), 850-2598 (cell) or email firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you!
School picture days are coming up at the Day Nursery centers. We could always use an extra hand to help escort the children from the classroom to the photographer and back. The time is 8:30-11:30am. We have a variety of locations and dates from the end of September through the end of October. If this sounds like something you are interested in, call Susan Davis at the Day Nursery office for more info at 636-9197 ext. 227.
