Phyllis Halcomb Pappas departed this life on Sunday, December 18, 2011 in her home peacefully, unexpectedly. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Anthony Pappas, Sr. and her parents Oscar Eli and Mary King Halcomb. One of seven children, she graduated from Howe High School and immediately began a 20-year career with L.S. Ayres department store (1947 to 1967) and served in varied roles that ranged from model to department manager, buyer, and associate buyer for departments such as the French and Crystal Rooms, juniors, swimwear, millinery and more.

She was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and involved in various organizations such as the Day Nursery, and served as president of the St. Vincent’s Hospital Guild in 1972 and 1973. Phyllis will be remembered for her elegance, decorum, poise and humor by her friends and family.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lee Pappas and son, John Anthony Pappas, Jr.

Funeral Mass will be on Friday, December 23, 11 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5692 Central Ave., with calling at 10 a.m.http://www.flannerbuchanan.com

Mary Alice Boarini passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2011 from a heart attack. She was 82. All those who knew her know she lived a life full of love, laughter, and giving. Mary Alice believed that faith, hope, and love could help one accomplish anything.

Mary Alice is survived by her three children, Mary Anne Noble (David), Julia Conaghan (Tom), and Joe Boarini (Karen/Mimi). She had 7 granddaughters. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband Frank Boarini.

Mary Alice was a native of the west side of Indianapolis growing up just south of Speedway, on Grande Ave. She attended St. Anthony Grade School and St. Agnes Academy. She graduated from Purdue University in 1951 where she also met the love of her life, Frank Boarini. Mary Alice and Frank operated Edward C. Grande Wholesale Greenhouses at 7600 Rockville Rd. for four decades. They raised their family and enjoyed many wonderful times with family and friends on the 40 acres where their home and greenhouses stood.

Mary Alice truly appreciated her friends from The Proctor Club of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Day Nursery Auxiliary, and The Saint Joe Gal’s.

A florists’ roots grow deep and Mary Alice would find it a remarkable tribute if you would buy flowers for someone you care about to share a little love. Memorial contributions can be made to The Little Sister’s of the Poor or The Sisters of Providence.

Arrangements are being handled by Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel , 740 East 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN. Calling will be held Thursday December 8, 2011 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Catholic burial Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, 1375 South Mickley, Indianapolis, IN on Friday December 9th, 2011 at 11 a.m.

We just received word this morning that Day Nursery Auxiliary member Mary Alice Boarini passed away unexpectedly.  We do not have the details of the arrangements yet but will update this post when they become available.

Mary Alice was recognized this past May for 50 years of service to our Auxiliary.  She was honored at a luncheon at the Meridian Hills Country Club.
